I think it is because all those countries take international play very seriously. A way to impress the western world. Many of these countries groom athletes from a very young age. It is their full time job. I went to China years ago for volleyball and they had a school where 3 & 4 year old were heavily training in various sports.

maybe, because americans are less focused than foreigners. they take things, especially something like sports, very seriously. or maybe americans don't know how to spell "medal" like some people asking this question.......... hahaha
