  1. The DVDs were packed in taller sleeves to follow home video industry standards.

The typical single disc case measures 190mm × 135mm × 13mm; the height is very close to the 188mm standard width of a VHS videocassette, allowing DVDs to use shelving intended for VHS media.

  2. DVDs replace VHS.  Store that used to rent VHS tapes (Blockbuster) have shelves designed to hold VHS tapes. So the DVD package needs to be sort of the same size.

CDs replaced 12" vinyl records.  Music stores needed to redo their shelving anyway.

  3. I think because they try to give the customer feeling he facing big deal more than if it Cd's

  4. Since DVDs contain more than one film, normally, printing of their titles and some photograph of the hero, needs more space. For additional space requirement, the packages have to be made larger.

The DVDs packages are larger ,because it has more memory capacity than CD   hee hee   :D

  6. The reason is the same as why video games are in big boxes when its only a cd size. It is so the buyer is thinking they are getting more for their money so the companies can charge more.
