Why are Danish princes Nikolai and Felix styled HH rather than HRH?

His Highness, often abbreviated HH, is a style for members of ducal families, some grand ducal families, and lesser members of some royal families. The style is officially used by junior members of the royal houses of Denmark and the Netherlands. Before 1917, it was also used by some junior members of the British royal house.

Both Prince Nikolia and Prince Felix are sons of HRH Prince Joachim, second son of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark. Therefore, they fall into the category of  "junior members of the House of Glücksburg", and will eventually be shifted down the line when his cousin Prince HRH Prince Christian has his own children.

Note: However, all children and grandchildren of Margrethe hold the title of Prince or Princess of Denmark with the style of His or Her Royal Highness or His or Her Highness, whether or not they are immediate or distant male-line descendants.

Simply because in Denmark the style of HRH is only available to the children of kings, queens and the crown prince of Denmark., as members in the most direct line. All other male-line descendants use the lower style of HH unless they have lost their princely titles and become counts of Rosenborg. It simply differentiates between members of the "immediate" royal family and more distant cousins, etc.

This is also the reason why outside of Norway princes and princesses without the HRH are styled HH, because they are remote male-line descendants of the Danish Royal Family.

Problems with Rachelle's answer, as usual. Margrethe's grandchildren are not members of the House of Glücksburg since they are female-line descendants. All grandchildren and children whether or not they are immediate or distant descendants? Um, hello, there's no question about it, grandchildren and children are NEVER distant. Margarethe's ONLY descendants are male-line since she only had sons.
