  1. The idea is to make sure someone didn't die of a contagious disease.  If a coroner finds someone who died of bubonic plague, hanta virus, etc. this would be a major concern for our public health.  For example, a couple of years ago, a student at a local high school came down with meningitis and doctors were afraid that other students had been exposed.  As a result, about 400 students and teachers were tested to make sure they didn't have the disease.

  2. Because they have a lot of work to do. The quicker they can find cause of death the quicker they can see the next patient.

  3. Because it's more expensive to keep them on drip drugs or things like that and once a bed is cleared, it's open for another patient. Not to mention it's completely unhealthy to have an unattended corpse lying in the hospital.

  4. The diagnosis of death or "brain death" is not taken lightly by the vast majority of responsible physicians.  Physicians have no vested interest in having their patients die.  The timely and accurate diagnosis of any condition serves to ensure optimal care of the ill or injured patient.

The timely diagnosis of expiration by a physician is in accordance with medical ethics and is generally appreciated by the patient's family members and/or next of kin.

  5. because the dead body looses freshness with time.

and diagnosis is more accurate when the body is fresh.
