  1. This is just a trim level, i.e. XLT, LS, SES, LE.  In the Explorer, I don't think it actually means anything. Sometimes companies will make a trim level stand for something, like "SE" for "Special Edition," but usually, they are just combinations of letters and/or numbers that sound decent.

    In general, a trim level defines a set of standard features and/or equipment.  Using the 2008 Explorer as an example, the "XLT" comes with cloth seats, while the "Eddie Bauer" comes with leather, and the "Limited" comes with better leather seats.  Also, manufacturers may make some options only available with some trim levels.


  2. XLS are package groups. LIke the Eddie bauer or the king ranch package in the super duty and expeditions.
