Why is Greenland is shown as bigger than South America on some maps when its not

  1. I think one type of map called the Mercator, stretches out the parts of the map near the poles so it looks like Greenland is larger than South America.


  2. There are many ways to project the surface of a sphere onto a flat surface. There will always be variations in perspective.

  3. It is due to Mercator projection (or map projection), which stretches and distorts areas closer to the north and south poles moreso than areas closer to the equator.
