Please realize that it takes more than half a second to move one’s foot from the brake to accelerator so do not honk the split second the light changes from red to green. Also when a neighborhood street is void of traffic that does not mean it is ok to drive as fast as possible. And when the light does change to green do not floor the accelerator this is just wasting gas. Finally when there is more than 3 feet of space from the car in front of me this is not an invitation to change lanes. PS: The good lord invented turn signals for a reason, use them!

  1. I am currently living in Lima and I just can't get used to the way people drive here, it's a total chaos and over all the smoke is just sooooo bad! I also asked myself a few years ago, but I just gave up and live with it.... sad!

  2. I think it has to do with the 80's when terrorism ran rampart in Peru. At the time, traffic lights did not work (because terrorist kept blowing up power lines from the hydros to the cities) and standing too long in one place was an invitation for an assault or a kidnapping. Luckily that is not the case anymore, but it has been ingrained in the psyche of Peruvians in general and Limeños in particular to the point were they still react as if times hadn't changed.

  3. Funny....the other poster's response...I live in Miami (bad drivers everywhere) and am married to an impatient Limeno.  He is a very sweet person, as I find most Peruvians to be, but is h**l behind the wheel.  Worse, he likes to drive motorcycles.  Being in a car, he actually has to wait in traffic sometimes. Nothing makes him crabbier faster!  Drives me crazy...it's probably my #1 complaint about my hubby.

  4. Please do not generalize....not all limeños drive like h**l! I guess it's a transport problem we have here, we tend to drive in a defensive way as the public transportation system is a chaos and you either drive recklessly in order to avoid mayor collisions or you just don't drive and take a taxi.

It is also a matter of street education, public safety education and transport regulations. The government has been trying to do something but it is not enough.

As for the city with the worst drivers in the world...IT'S MIAMI!!!! Last week in CNN they published the article that after a mayor research around the world, Miami was declared the city with the most reckless drivers and the city with the most traffic tickets due to drivers who do not respect signs or policemen.

  5. Because everyone with a driver license took 90 hours of classes and paid $500 to get it. This is what happens when you take all of the bad drivers off of the road.

If there is 3 feet of space in front of you and someone wants to merge, you slow down 3 miles per hour and let him in. If you do the same they will let you in. No honking, no slowing down, everything is smooth.
