Why are NFL rosters limited to 53 players? Why not raise the total with so many modern injuries?

  1. They can always get more players from week to week. Each team has a practice squad, and there are free agents available.

    The catch is, you don't want one team to control too many players. You want to give guys the chance to play somewhere, and that means the good teams shouldn't control everyone.


  2. There are not that many injuries on a single team.  Very rarely does a team have to play a last-string player.  If they have to, the can pull someone up from the practice squad when they put some one on the PUP (Physically Unable to Preform) list. A PUP player does not count as a slot on the roster.

  3. 53 is more then enough. Each team can also put 8 players on their practice/ developmental squad. Most teams carry more then the 61 players they are allowed to. There are ways around the 53 man roster. Like sticking guys on PUP or IR, for minor injuries if they are young and promising. You keep them but you free up a roster spot to bring in a vet that can help right away.
