I mean worth money, they are truly great works and i am not saying they are horrible in any way. I was just reading an article that said the 5 of the world's top 10 most expensive paintings are by Pablo Picasso. What makes his art worth so much money compared to other great artists?

  1. There are several forces at work here.

First, Picasso was arguably THE master of the modernist period.  He managed to work in a variety of media and in a variety of styles.  At times he did cubism, impressionism, neoclassicism, surrealism, and his own little genres like the blue period.  He did fabulous sculpture as well as painting and other 2-D media.

Second, his work is highly regarded.

Third, his originals are rare and so they increase in value--just like any of the old masters' works will increase.

Fourth, there's an art market that depends on ever-increasing values for paintings like his.  Sotheby's and the collectors who care only about return on the dollar are feuling that aspect.

  2. Jumping onto a wagon.  Artists rarely could match the talent that the Renaissance painters have shown so did other things so there could be no comparisons possible.  Someone supposedly in the know talks the style up then everyone with money has to obtain one to show how much taste they have.  Demand is high, supply is low, the cost rises.

  3. he has a reputation. poeple recognise him and know his name i guess
