Question:

Why are Penguins fans so mean and nasty to Flyers fans?

Going to college in Pittsburgh was a nightmare for me. I had no idea how vicious the people were in Pittsburgh. If I would of known, I would went elsewhere.

I've grown to hate the Penguins, as well as the Steelers and Pirates. I had no grudges about Pittsburgh before college, but now I absolutely dispise Pittsburgh.

Watching the Penguins beat down the Flyers in the East Finals was tough.

I was glad to see the Pens lose tonight. I hope they lose to the Wings just like the Flyers did in 1997. I want Pittsburgh fans to feel the pain I felt back then.

If they hate us, then I'll just hate you right back.

  1. This goes both ways. As a Flyers fan, I give Pens fans all sorts of c**p, and vice versa. It's usually not bad on here, though.

It's a state rivalry/Sidney Crosby/Flyers fans at every single game thing. It's true, Flyers fans are always at away games, in the front rows, in packs. We make our presence known.

  2. thats what happens when your team is a rival of the pens, plus it doesnt help that philly fans are  notorious for being intimidating to other teams fans who go to philly to watch a game, its like being a sens fan in toranto, you would expect to get S**t for it, its the nature of the game.....

  3. i'm a penguins fan but i know what you mean. i live near penn state and i'm a notre dame fan. sorry if people are nasty to you about it but we're not all like that.

  4. it is because the flyers beat the penguin in year ,1989, 1990

penguin want to revenge them in 2008 .

    Hockey games are like that

one team Western side or the Easten sides is going to Stanley cup, the other western team or eastern team will all want to go in to  Stanley cup .

It will call Pay Back Time.

And pittsburgh is known as Hockey town

    .

  5. Check your data, Nitro. The Pittsburgh Hornets were an AHL team before the first expansion in 1967, the year both the Flyers and Penguins entered the NHL.

The Flyers put together an impressive organization and won two Stanley Cups before the franchise was 10 years old.

Meanwhile, the Penguins skated in slush until Mario, and were routinely pounded by the Flyers. The bitterness of being owned by another city goes back to 1967. So, after finally winning a conference final against the Flyers, instead of sporstmanship, a lot of cheap shots poured out from a few Pens fans. Not the majority by far, but they always stand out.

My good friend is from Mississippi, lived in Dallas and was there when the Stars arrived and has pretty good hockey sense. We went to sports bars together for the entire Stars-Wings series and never had a cross word. But we had a h**l of a great time. He was at the bar last night for game one, marvelling at the Wings, saying "See why I hate them so much? They're so darned good!"

  6. Rivalry

  7. Its kind of a 2 way street.  Philly fans have a reputation for being mean.  Being that the Pens and Flyers are in the same state and have been around for a while, of course there will be some animosity.  Ericas 100% right though, the Flyers seem to have the most knowledgable following in this forum.

  8. Well, it's kinda like this. The citizens of the Steel City have always looked down their nose at Philly. Personally, I don't care what someone thinks if they want to be negative, but since we Philadelphians get smited here a lot, I sometimes get the sense that those that talk trash must have an inferiority complex.

There are true sports fans out of Pittsburgh that I like and respect because they understand sportsmanship and the give and take of ribbing each other about their favorite teams. Joe B mentioned them by name.

But there are some finger-pointing hypocrites that showed up here and just asked for my scorn. But all in all, I don't have anything against Pitt, their teams, or players. If it seems that I do, perhaps it's because I cross the line between good natured ribbing and dealing with fair weather idiots that show up here because they got kicked out of other message boards and start slinging the mud.

I gotta admit, these bandwagon fans really got under my skin this time. I'll take the Sabres and Senators bandwagons COMBINED anytime because it didn't get personal.

NITRO - The fact is that the Flyers and Penguins entered the NHL during the same year. And generalizations are a symptom of an arrogant mind.

  9. I got $20 CAD (its worth more right now) that Toronto is worse.

  10. I'm sorry you were mistreated. One of my best friends is a Flyers fan and while she gets razzed a lot here in Pittsburgh, it's nothing too serious. Even back in high school, everyone grew to accept that she was an abomination (a Flyers fan who eventually grew a fondness for the Penguins) and liked her for her anyway. I'm still waiting for her to cancel herself out of existence though, hehe.

Here in the hockey section some of the most knowledgeable, humorous, and agreeable people are Flyers fans. I'm cool with a bit of them.

ADD: Haha, about what "sabres082" said: I've met a lot of Sabres fans in Pittsburgh and not a one of them wasn't nice. It's true, Flyers fans aren't known for their cuddliness. The Flyers seem quite proud of their notoriety. Flyers fans were voted the most intimidating in the NHL and didn't the Flyers market that?

  11. Because Pittsburgh citizens are fiercely loyal to their sports teams.

Its like the Red Sox and Yankees.

You won't find many Steelers and Browns fans as bosom buddies, and its the same way in hockey.  The Flyers are plenty mean back to us and we don't care, we just beat 'em up on the ice.

Its sort of a cultural thing, you have to have lived here and be a part of it to understand.

  12. Because the penguins manhandled the Flyers

  13. Before we start, two questions:

    1. How could you hate one of the worst teams in baseball?

    2. You live in Philly and you call Pittsburgh a vicious city?

Many people hate the Flyers because they play dirty and are extremely scrappy. I believe that the Penguins' fans' deep rooted hatred comes from when the Flyers were instated as a team in 1967. Pennsylvania, in turn, had two teams. Pittsburgh resented Philly because they now had to share the state with them.
