Judge orders comatose Honduran woman at Phoenix hospital kept in U.S.

PHOENIX - A judge has temporarily stopped a Phoenix-area hospital from sending a woman back to her native Honduras.

Sonia del Cid Iscoa has been in a coma at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center since April 20, when she prematurely gave birth to a girl, family members said.

Iscoa has been in the U.S. legally for years through temporary-protection status, said Nora Montoya, the country's general consul in Arizona.

  1. Any immigrant who becomes a "public charge" is immediately deportable.  Anyone here in violation of any immigration law is an illegal alien and likewise immediately deportable.

The reason so many American citizens cannot afford medical care or health insurance is because over 1/4 of every hospital bill is "cost shifted" -- costs of non-paying illegal aliens, temporary visaholders and immigrants who are ineligible for Medicaid and who don't pay.

Actually, the non-paying non-citizen could call their consulate for assistance in transferring funds from their home country or relatives to pay their bills, or request assistance in repatriation.  This is the purpose of a consulate in international law!  It is the consulates' obligation to help its country's citizens.  However, illegal aliens in particular refuse to contact their consulate for assistance in an attempt to avoid paying the hospital bills and to try to remain at other's expense.

ICE will not pick up deportable aliens who require medical care as they do not have medical facilities.  Therefore, it is cheaper for the hospital to get the patients back home via air ambulance than keep them.

Two important points for "humanitarians":  medical care is available and cheaper in their home countries, and it is very important to the recovery of an ill or injured person to have the support of their family.  It is better for the patient to return them to their own country and their relatives.

The best solution to the problem of health care for non-citizens is 2-fold: require all tourists, temporary workers, immigrants, etc. to maintain health insurance for the duration of their stay; and require non-citizens unable to pay their medical bills to contact their consulate for immediate assistance in repatriation, or the hospital/medical facility may contact the consulate on their behalf.

  2. but of misbehaiours an bad attitude

  3. It is an act of Discrimination and Violation of HUMAN RIGHTS, as such now the Human Rights commissioner should be informed and  the subject matter be given importance from, UNO  For the simple reasons that, the Women is in Coma and under treatment of Docters, beside over 5 years in US unless other wise she  was active in criminal activities? the measures are in competant and absurd? being an act of Rascism?

  4. The answer is in three words you quoted from the article: "temporary-protection status."  Temporary being the important word.

  5. What I find impossible to believet is that it costs that much to send someone to any other country. I believe the Hospitals are actually happy to do it because we are actually paying this exhorbitant bill and they are profiting from it.

I am not calloused but, I am tired of hearing all of the bleeding hearts crying about why I am not happy about paying for the free medical care that is given to illegals and legals who overstay.

I am having enough difficulty shelling out for my own family to have medical insurance and I can't afford to have dental insurance or vision because my company feels that it is too expensive to provide it and it is definately too expensive for me to do it on my own.

Why is it too expensive? because the high price we pay is to offset what medicaid won't pay.

As for your original question about why are permanent residents being deported. I don't see anything in what you provided that identified them as permanent. The child was not a permanent resident simply because it was born in the US. If that were true, I would have 2 daughters that were German citizens because we were in Germany when they were born.

The story about the person who woke up in Mexico shouldn't be here because you don't have any facts to support that story. I did some research and Believe me when I tell you I have extensive resourses and the only thing I could find was a blurb about a man who was deported because he slipped into a drug induced coma when he swallowed several baloons to avoid being caught by Border Patrol Agents. This particular incident happened more than 15 years ago.

  6. This woman was not a legal permanent resident.  She was here "years" under temporary protected status.  It's time for her to go.  Bravo for immigration.

Why should the US continue to pay medical costs for non-citizens?  Simple.  They should not.  It's time for their own country's to pick up their welfare tab.

  7. Becoming a public charge is a deportable offense, you can not support yourself financially which is a condition of your immigration status so you get deported.

A baby born in Tucson, AZ however IS a us citizen and therefore CAN NOT legally be deported.
