  1. Good question. May be its so you cant see the light at the end of the tunnel. lol

    The Clyde Tunnel in Glasgow, the Medway Tunnel in Kent, the Brynglas Tunnels on the M4 in Newport and the Monmouth Tunnels in Wales are all dead straight.

    It is generally cheaper to tunnel in a straight line, but what often forces a change in direction is the bedrock through which you are tunnelling. This was the reason for the original horrific double bend in the Blackwall Tunnel.

    As for making it easy for horses going through them - when did you last see a horse and cart in a road tunnel !!!!!  (There really are some stupid answers posted on Yahoo Answers)
