After spending 2 weeks in Spain, and getting no sleep at most of the hostales and hotels, because the streets in this country are h**l at night, I would like to know, why Spaniards have to yell all night on the streets when they walk aroundor scream in their cell phones. Please, don't give as an answer that I should use earplugs. Because the people here scream all day.

So, hope many Spanish answer this question.

  1. Hi! I'm Spanish...yes we talk loud compared to other nationalities. I remember when I lived in the UK everybody told me that I should lower my tone...a lot of people told me! so I got used and when I came back to Spain I spent all day telling my mom and my friends not to be so loud!!

    But I don't know why!

By the way not ALL the streets in this country are h**l at night. I live in Barcelona in a QUIET neighborhood, and I can perfectly sleep at night, it depends on where you are located in the city (city centers near touristic areas tend to be noisier).

  2. Because Spain was and is two things :

    - A huge country with a lot of space, not that trained in the "hush the neighbours might hear we live with 200 on a square kilometer" sort of thing.

    - A very proud country, where nobody thinks that what he says can not be heard by anyone, and where people still grow up with the idea "this spaniard can do whatever he wants to".

Some call that rudeness. I think it's part of the heritage of being anarchistic and free and open.

Since I live in Spain I wonder why people in the north always start to whisper in elevators or the waiting room of docters, as if they are in a church.

I also got totally used to noise and do not even notice.

  3. Take a heavy backpack and walk down a sidewalk filled with people. Watch who is giving way and moving, so you can walk. Watch how people park their car in front of you rental car. Don't be surprised when you have to pay at the drop off of the car for parking damages. Stay at a youth hostel with about 100 Spanish school kid.

    You will understand.

  4. The Spanish like to party and stay up late. Some view that as a positive, others don't. My suggestion is to learn something about why they are the way they are. They are lighthearted and like to have fun. I can't really blame them.

  5. No offense to the Spanish people. But when I went Spain 2 years ago, they were the Rudest people I have ever met. In my opinion I think the Spaniards have a superiority complex because they conquered so many different countries, but as I told one Spaniard: "At one time weren't the Spaniard's ruled by the Moors for 700 years" He just walked away.

  6. Spain is like everywhere else quite areas and noisy areas

  7. Hi well, often it depends. You seem to have chosen hotels in the "mogollón" areas, which are areas mostly used to party, specially by foreigner, many of them , are also quite loud when they party, and beside in Spain U can party and are places open till much late into the night.

These areas are usually in the old town nucleus where most streets are narrow, made of stone or brick and peatonal or for walking, closed to trafic, and hence they are streets where the sound is magnified tenfold by the narrowness, and scant noise detention from old windows that leave the sound pass through. Inspain, italy, greece, germany, or many other old towns around the world from africa to asia you will find similar problems if you stay at hotels in perty areas.

We also like singing and when they are slightly buzzed they sing , however all this is the same if you went to many other countries and stayed in the party districts. Generally the difference between Spanish drunk people and many other is that generally spanish now how to hold their liquor since socially we find unacceptable acting like a jerk when you are drunk, and specially we do not get agressive so try to see if the screams in spain are happy and party screams while in many other countries there is a lot of cursing and agressivity. If you go to most neighbourhoods where there is no mogollon you will find them calm and quiet.

Also, spanish people are passionate and expressive and they like intensity more than dullness, comtemplation and apathy. The phone , you are right and there are two reasons often poor connections because of people talking long distance and then people beyond certain age, and certain education, which believe that if they shout more during a phone conversation, they will be heard better. Again this is something I have not only experienced in Spain.

As for the previous guy`s comment on Catalans being quiter maybe he has not been in el barrio viejo the Barcelona, el cascon antiguo or las ramblas at night. Anyway even if he was right Catalans are not spanish, or at least this is what they feel and I agree with them, so its a senseless comparison.

Maybe you should not go to centric and old town hotels or pensiones, and you will find you can sleep perfectly with no noise. What I do not understand is why you have gone to those hotels, streets and even come to our country, if you want quietness. You should have gone much better to a nordic country where screams are not so frecuent, though not so nice either.

Next time choose your locations better. Or you mean to say that spanish and foreignres should stop partying in their party districts because you have not chosen correctly your hotel?

I imagine U will not like my answer but I believe you are generalizing without giving it much thought and U are not considering the tipe of noise you have in similar locations world wide. Many visitor from, most retentive and apathetic societies also like to come to spain to be able to clean their mind and spirit from all the emotional dirt they acumulate in their countries,  since they can not express it, and we tolerate it and even understand it.

Change your hotel and hopefully you will be able to sleep,

    wish you the best

    S

  8. Spain is officially only the second most noisy country in the world. The worst is Japan.

The bars are noisy because of the Spaniards and the tile floors.

The worst noise is the 'motos'. They even sell motos which

do not comply with the noise regulations!

    Catalans are quieter.
