Why are Tom Brokaw & Barbara Walters considered legends in broadcasting?

It's of my understanding that broadcast journalists/news anchors must have a pretty fair grip on the English language.

These two seem to speak a language all their own.

What's really goin' on?

  1. Tom Brokaw served a variety of roles over a long period of time, and did them well. Once he got to the network level, he did everything from host Today to White House reporter. And, of course, he was the host of NBC Nightly News for years, and did a good job.

Never underestimate the importance of longevity. It's not easy to wear so well over a long period of time. Brokaw did that.

I second the other person's remarks about Walters. She was the first woman to anchor a network newscast, and has done several groundbreaking specials and programs. Not bad for a woman whose first appearance on network TV came when they needed a pinch-hitter for a swimsuit feature on Today.

  2. I get Barbara Walters. She really broke the gender wall in serious broadcast journalism.

Tom Brokaw is a nothing. He was a just a replacement guy that hung in there for years. Nothing special with him
