Why are Truffles so expensive?

I've seen they're like $250/ounce. That's quite steep for a simple mushroom, what makes them so expensive?

  1. we can't grow them

they only grow in the Wild

  2. They are really rather rare to start with, and normally require specialist dogs or pigs (yes, really - both can sniff them out!) to find them. That's labour-intensive to start with, so that will hike the price up.

There hasn't been any way devised yet to cultivate them in large amounts commercially, which keeps the price up - it's that rare item thing again.

There's only a few places they will grow. They tend to grow in countries with reasonable labour costs (rather than pitifully low-paid workers) so that will add to the price.

They are seen as a status-symbol food item, so lots of people want to eat them (or to been seen eating them - not quite the same thing) so you have the supply-and-demand thing going on here - lots of demand but a small supply. Hence a high price.

  3. truffles are very difficult to find as they are deep underground, most are the color of dirt and the main way to find them is to use  a pig to sniff them out

  4. For that price u could get some "magic" mushrooms that would rock your world.  Mushrooms are one of the sickest foods there are!

  5. It difficult to make it .
