  1. 1.  A lot of people say UFO when they mean alien spacecraft instead of an actual unidentified flying object.  We're very literal people.

    2.  We're scientists.  That means we believe in stuff that has been proven, don't believe in stuff that's been disproven, and are open to the possibility of anything that hasn't been either proven or disproven.  Space aliens out in the universe is an example of something that's neither been proven nor disproven.  Space aliens visitting Earth technically hasn't been either, but it seems like if it's been happening we'd have proof.

  2. Perhaps because there is, as yet, no scientific evidence that UFO's and aliens actually exist, astronomers and cosmologists don't want to be associated with such exotic phenomena.

  3. Because it's pseudoscience and pseudoreligion propagated by people for their own interests, not science or anything having to do with astronomy or space.

  4. they like scientific proof of things, but there could be aliens out there

  5. Project Bluebeam comes very soon and you will be able to say,

"See! I told you so! Especially you Christians! Dumb scientists!"

    For a moment anyways... enjoy...

  6. Maybe because it's asked ad nauseaum by people who won't accept any answers except ones that confirm their blind faith in the existence of UFOs and aliens. It belongs in the Alternative section, not Astronomy and Science.

Edit; Same thing for all the 2012 questions.

  7. UFOs and ETs are regarded as taboo subjects - are very controversial, when really they should not be.

The study of UFO craft can lead us to develop our new space vehicles (and one leading aircraft designer did take note of this, and incorporated this in his new design - I think it is mentioned in Nick Cook's book "The Hunt for Zero Point" (Energy) which covers the birth of the US aerospace industry - amongst other things.

It does seem odd there is the SETI program, the search for extraterrestrial life in the universe, via radio telescopes - in the hope of making contact with ETs - yet there does not seem to be the same plan - should they somehow appear on the Earth, wanting contact.

There was a formal approach to the United States for official contact by the Plejarens (Plejadians/Pleiadians) in 1979 - but this was ignored and not taken up.

We do need to be aware of our own history - to know of the difficulties involved.

Authorities do not like their authority questioned - especially by the public.  It is natural for people to want to know about UFOs and ETs - and this section should be a resource for such information - however, UFOs and ETs are not taken seriously by the scientific community - such is our lack of awareness about UFOs and ETs.  Getting to the real story about these, is not easy - you can find all kinds of conflicting answers - and many which do not make sense at all.

Why not go to a ET source - and see if you will agree with it or not?

Scientists are concerned about their careers - and to be associated with a subject that is not held in high respect by their peers, can be career suicide.

  8. idk but they exist. why wouldn't they? we exist. space is so infinite that we could not possibly be able to see them. they could even look like us. you never know. either they are too far away or too smart for us humans. aliens/ufos are probably frowned upon because scientists simply just can't explain them and have so many theories or just aren't telling us because they fear exposing such delicate species to a harsh world.

  9. I have no idea, if there isn't another form of life out there it sure would be a huge waste of space.

  10. WHY DO THEY NOT? I ASK THE SAME QUESTION TO MYSELF ALL THE TIME. IT'S CALLED PLAUSIBLE DENIABILITY.

THEY FROWN UPON IT BECAUSE THEY ARE IN DENIAL OF SUPERIOR FORMS OF LIFE TO US. WHICH DO EXIST. IT IS MAINLY OUT OF FEAR AND DOGMATIC CONTROL THAT THIS WORLD AND THE VARIOUS 'SECTORS' ARE AFRAID TO ADMIT TO A GREATER POWER THAT BE. THEY WANT PROOF AND YET IT'S ALL OUT THERE...CROP CIRCLES (DING!)...UFO SIGHTINGS WORLD WIDE WHICH ARE RECORDED. HECK I HAVE SEEN 6 SIGHTINGS IN MY PAST FEW YEARS. SILVER DISKS, BOOMERANG CRAFT, GLOWING WHITE SPHERES ETC.

THEY SAY IT'S NOT RELATED TO SCIENCE? BULLSHIT. IT'S ALL ABOUT SCIENCE. PROPULSION PHYSICS.

THEY SAY IT'S NOT ABOUT ASTRONOMY? BULLSHIT. THESE BEINGS ARE FROM OUTER SPACE, THEY TRAVEL THROUGH THE COSMOS. OF COURSE THIS IS ABOUT ASTRONOMY! THESE BEINGS NAVIGATE THE STARS. WE DON'T.

AS FAR AS NOT BEING POSSIBLE TO TRAVEL INTERSTELLAR-WISE...ANOTHER 'BULLSHIT'...IT'S MORE THAN POSSIBLE.

PEOPLE NEED TO BE WOKEN UP. WE ARE AT THE INFANTILE STAGE OF BEING INVITED INTO A GALACTIC COMMUNITY. IT MAY NOT HAPPEN EITHER. IT REALLY DEPENDS ON HOW PEOPLE DOWN HERE BEHAVE AND IF MOST OF THEM ARE TURNED OFF BY THE IDEA OF UFO/STAR PEOPLE...THEN WE MAY NOT GET TO BE A PART OF THAT COMMUNITY.

    PEACE.

  11. Simply because we do not have any scientifical proof. Too many nutcases claim they have seen UFOs and it's driving people crazy; why waste your time. We have better things to do.

  12. I don't know, but I've seen one....I swear.

  13. You asked this same question yesterday.  Wasn't my answer good enough for you?

People who actually know something about Astronomy and space understand just how distant the stars actually are.  Interstellar travel is impossible.  The fuel and energy requirements stagger the imagination.  Therefore there are no alien spaceships zooming around buzzing rednecks or creating pretty crop circles.  Anyone who claims they are seeing aliens and spaceships is either lying or they are delusional.  Who wants to deal with liars or crazy people?  Not me!!!

  14. Because they belong in the myth section, not the astronomy section.  If you want to ask a serious question about the probability of aliens existing in A&S, go ahead, but don't ask a question like, "Has anyone else here seen a UFO?" or "Does anyone else here believe in UFO's?"  That's just plain stupid and a waste of time.

  15. I have never frowned upon an alien.

However, this could be because I've never seen one.

I even participate in programs looking for aliens (intelligent lifeforms elsewhere than on Earth).

What I frown on is the idea that aliens are routinely visiting us and, despite having traveled all this distance and using up all the energy required for the trip, they suddenly decide to spend their time convincing all of Earth's governments to participate in a gigantic cover-up.

Our own politicians can't even cover up the names of the prostitutes they see.

I accept that there could be lots of other forms of life in our universe.

I accept that there are objects seen flying in the sky that are unidentified.

I have a much harder time being forced to believe that the two are linked, especially given the lack of evidence that they could be linked.

  16. They're frowned upon because they DON'T EXIST. If you ask questions about bullshit phenomena, you're wasting the time of people who want to ask legitimate questions.

  17. Because this is supposed to be a science Q&A section.  Science concentrates on phenomena that can be either proven via experimentation under controlled conditions, or verified/confirmed via repetitive, objective and independent observations.  UFOs and Space Alliens are a highly speculative subject - many people claim having seen them, but no independent, verifiable evidence exist.

  18. Mostly because many people are not capable of differing between what they believe, and what they know, and thus ask questions based on their own believes, which other people can't answer in scientific and logical ways.

It is possible to answer questions about UFOs, as UFOs are a scientific fact - unknown flying objects exist until they are identified.

It is also possible to discuss the possible existence of aliens in outer space, but in that context, there is no evidence that they exist. We just have no reason to believe that they should not exist.

But when people combine aliens and UFOs into their own pseudo-religion of aliens visiting Earth, abducting humans and the government keeping all evidence except such stories secret and this suppressive government not even killing the witnesses of such important secrets...

It becomes fiction or theology. And not part of science. And astronomy and space belong to the large field of science.

The same with astrology - while astrology was once the foundation of astronomy, it later separated from science and became a superstition. There are no two astrologists on this planet, who would produce the same predictions for your life based on the same stars or use the same scientific methods - they mostly make things up.

  19. Because the two subjects are totally and completely unrelated. Astronomers do not study the sky in search of aliens or to point their telescopes at the sky hoping to see a UFO fly by.

Astronomy and Space is a category of science. As such, it deals with real observable phenomena and the mathematical calculations and theories which relate to and explain what is observed.

UFOs and aliens are none of this. UFOs and aliens have no direct proof or evidence of existing. Despite the multitude of stories, that's all the subject deals with. Unproven stories with absolutely NO physical evidence.

Watching someone's homemade video on youtube or listening to some person say that they think they saw something or they felt something go up their *** last night has nothing to do with the real world.

It's called paranormal. Look up the word sometime. Then compare it to the word science.

Compare the word pseudoscience to the word science.

Paranormal phenomena are things that people say they saw but they have absolutely no evidence. The listener is then left to believe or disbelieve based upon the story. This is not science.

Paranormal rightfully includes such things as UFOs, aliens, bigfoot, ghosts, the Lochness Monster, crop circles, the Bermuda Triangle, and psychic c**p like channeling.

Compare the above to planets and stars and the electrical and gravitational forces in space.

One is real based upon observable and measurable evidence. The other is simply a belief in something without any proof.

It is only a flaw in the y/a word recognition computer system that kicks UFO and alien questions into the incorrect category of A&S. It should get kicked into Science and Mathematics - Alternative - Paranormal Phenomena.

If enough persons wrote to yahoo in the Forum section to rectify this problem, maybe yahoo would get off their asses and do something about this problem.

Not only do A&S people despise UFO and alien questions because it has nothing whatsoever to do with the A&S category, but there are hundreds to thousands of persons in the Alternative - Paranormal category who would LOVE to discuss UFO and alien questions.

  20. They aren't frowned on by me.  I think it is a near certainty that there are many civilizations far more advanced than us in this vast universe.  If you consider the facts that there are 73 sextillion stars in the known universe and that we have already found more than 300 extrasolar planets, it would be naive and egocentric to believe there are none.  Also, the Universe is 9 billion years older than our Solar System.  This means that other systems have had billions of years longer to develop intelligent life and advanced technology.  I find it strange that many scientists have to be dragged, kicking and screaming into the future.  They refuse to even consider any theories that they weren't taught in school.  I have always thought that one of the main functions of science is to investigate and question things, rather than just close our minds and stick with what others have decided in the past.  If we are not willing to consider new concepts, we will make no scentific progress.

I think the section dealing with Astronomy and Space is the appropriate place for these questions.  Those who consider anyone who has seen UFOs nutcases had better stop flying commercially, and stop depending on our police and our military officers.  There have been UFOs reported by airline pilots, military officers, astronauts, policemen, among many other sensible people.

  21. because people think they don't exist, but some were in the large, large galaxy they probably do.
