Why are UK gas prices linked to the price of oil?

Surely gas prices should be determined by the supply and demand for gas, and should not be linked to oil prices.

  1. It's called "contractual limitations" in other words if gas is cheaper than oil people will switch from oil to gas, leaving the oil companies very miffed. It's a loose/loose situation for the user.


  2. The oil prices are determined by the supply and demand for gas.  

    Therefore, it's a circular argument.  These items will forever be intertwined.

    FYI, when they say "oil prices", they're not referring to the stuff you lube your engine with...they're referring to the un-refined petroleum product that will be made into gas.
