  1. We owe our idea of democracy to the Greeks.  In the days of the founding fathers, people still studied Latin, Greek and the classics.  So, we pay tribute to the Greeks for their inspiration.  Also, that building style was popular in the South.  Many plantation houses were built of that style. It continued for a while.  My house was built around 1900 and it is a Greek Revival cottage.  Have you noticed that Washington's monument is Egyptian?

  2. Thomas Jefferson was the main inspiration behind it.  He was a Hellenophile (Lover of all things Greek) and at one time even wanted to give all of the cities in the United States Greek names. To him the Ancient Greeks were also symbolic of democracy.
