Why are USPS mailboxes blue? Have they always been blue? If not, why the change?

Can you please cite a reference point on the web where this is documented? (url, blog, etc)

Is this color (blue) related in any way to the United Nations' blue color?

  1. Yes, always blue in the last 40 years.  Red is like England.  We want to be different from England.  That's why we drive on the right side of the road too.


  2. I think it ties in w/ them having a Red White and Blue color scheme like the Country, and if they made the boxes white they'd constantly be hit in the winter either by people not paying attn. or by snow plows too busy to do so.

    That leaves Red and Blue, and Red is more of an angry color, especially on Large objects, while Blue is seen as more passive.
