  1. These designations open up additional names for city planners to use. After you use up all the presidents and flowers and tree names you have to get more creative to come up with the vast number of unique street names and using these designations allows you to get many more combinations using the same primary names. Some cities take that further and use that to designate where the names are found. In Phoenix, AZ all the avenues are west of Central and all the streets are east of Central. If you friend tells you they live on 43rd Avenue you immediately know they are 43 blocks west of Central and all you need to know then is their north south location. Here are a few to add to your list from a CA city:

    ALLEY

    AVENUE

    BOULEVARD

    BYWAY

    CANAL

    CIRCLE

    COURT

    COVE

    DRIVE

    HIGHWAY

    LANE

    LOOP

    MOTORWAY

    PARKWAY

    PLACE

    ROAD

    ROW

    STREET

    TERRACE

    TRAIL

    WALK

    WAY

    SPANISH-TYPE STREET NAME PREFIXES

    Avenida

    Calle

    Camino

    Carrera

    Paseo

  2. Because the houses are either on a street, a road, a lane or an avenue?

    Don't forget CT...

    Courts are lovely.

  3. These days avenue used to imply that the street is tree lined but was originally "a way of approach". Street is simply a paved road. A road was an open way for travelling between two places and a lane is a narrow hedged in road. Full definitions are on the Online Etymology Dictionary http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?sear...

  4. To distinguish them from other addresses.

38 Pacific would seem a bit odd, don't you think?
