First, Airbus came out with the 'Airbus A380-800', then Boeings '787-800' and then Boeings new '747-800' (sorry if I got the release dates mixed up lol)

so why is it that all the airliners coming out now are using the number 800????

  1. Well, Boeing names their aircrat in a series...i.e. -100, -200, -300

They are up to 8 major modifications now, so they will tend to end in a -800.

  2. They like it.

  3. The Asians like the number eight.

  4. There is no 787-800 or 747-800-  it is the 747-8, 787-8 (and 787-9).

In China, 8 is a lucky number.

  5. It's not an obsession, it's a simple progression of model numbers. The 747 has progressed through 8 iterations. The 787 is not the 800 model, it's the Dreamliner. The 737 has also progressed through 8 iterations, I think they are up to model -900 now. Nobody cares what's lucky in China...

  6. First DT3238 the first 787 to be released will be the 787-800 the same with the A380. The next for the 787 will be the 300 and then the 900

In the case of older aircraft is was by series name.

In the case of the 747 it is the 800 but more referd to as the B747-8.

  7. 800 is newer than 700

  8. that is very true they all contain the # 8. it is because the number eight is a lucky number in china and of course lucky #are good for aircraft lol. and also because some of the newest planes boeing and airbus aircraft manufacturing company's came out with so they are carrying on the tradition from what i have heard i hope this information has been helpful

  9. The reason for the 8 on the 787 is cus 8 is a sign of good luck in the Asian culture while on the A380, Airbus chose that cus the cross section which had triple decks looked like an 8.
