Why are all ships, boats and cars referred to as "She"?

I mean this in the best possible way.

Boats are like women, give her a lot of loving attention, she will take real good care of you.  Neglect her at your own peril.

Course, that's a tradition from back in the day, when there were no women boaters, or else nobody paid attention to 'em.
