  1. They are not. They alternate men's and women's names.

    Hurricane Gustav?

  2. They aren't anymore.

At one time, hurricanes were named after women because it was men doing the naming. In the mid-to-late 70s, however, women's groups complained about this practice, so they started alternating women's names with men's names.

But unless you've been hiding under a rock for the past 30 years, you'll know that hurricanes have been given men's names since 1979.  I still remember Hurricane David in 1979; it's the first male name to be retired.

  4. they don't always, hurricane andrew, ivan but they used to because everything about the world in latin languages, ancient languages is classed as feminine; the sky in french is refered to as she.

  5. They aren't. I never knew a woman named Gustav!

  6. They used to be, but they began using male names too in the '70s.

  7. because women are violent and if they are angry everybody suffers.

  8. tracey is right on this.  the names alternate.  it's just that a lot of men's names can be women's names now (eg charlie), so it seems like more than half of the hurricanes are named for women.

  9. lookup hurricane Andrew and all the destruction it caused.

  10. Because when they first come in they're all wet and wild, and when they leave they take the house with them.  LOL

    Love that old joke!

  11. Years ago hurricanes were named after women since "they can never make their minds up" on where they will go. Of course the petty women's groups attacked this as sexist when it was not and then the namers caved and started naming them after both males and female names.

  12. Old joke answer:  because they're "hur"ricanes, not "him"icanes.

Truth:  they've been using men's names for many years now.  Didn't you hear of Gustaf?

  13. You men like Gustav?

    It's because of.

  14. Floyd....is so not a chica name.

  15. They were all given feminine names until 1979. That might have been because the weather forecasters were all male and came up with the idea of naming these storms after their female relatives or girlfriends.

  16. They aren't.
