Research on service-learning indicates that women are twice as likely as men to sign up for a voluntary service-learning assignment. typically females outnumber males by a 2:1 or 3:1 margin. What role does gender play, if any, in shaping experiences in service-learning assignment? Do you think the fact of being male or female affects the way students approach their work in the community? sum, what is the relevance of gender today for university students engaged in community work?

  1. Women more often look at a situation and say 'how can I help?'.  Men look at a situation and say 'how will this help me?'.  Of course, that doesn't apply to every one in every situation.  It's a very broad generalization.

  2. Well, it could be one of many different reasons:

#1 - it could be because the men are still working 40 hours or more a week to support the family and the woman may only work part time, or be a stay at home mom.  This would allow for her to have time to volunteer.

#2 - it could be that the woman outnumber the men in population.  So that would be a good reason why more woman volunteer than men.

#3 - it could be that men want to get paid for everything that they do, that is called labor.  If they don't have a sign announcing their activity (SLOW MEN WORKING), then they are busy pushing buttons on their remote control in their "Couch potato mode".

(please  people... know that I am just in jest on this 3rd option.  I know a lot of men who do volunteer work and I appreciate them very much!!)

  3. Women are physically 'wired' with more caring attributes.

Women 'care' about these type of things more than men do.

    It is proven science.

'couch potato mode'  HAHA, boy aint' THAT the truth!!

  4. Many reasons are in play however the main reasons are:

    1.  Women by nature are more empathetic and nurturing.  They are also more likely to volunteer out of guilt that they may be better off than someone else.  Women are also more religious in nature feeling a responsibility to God to help.

    2.  Men typically are working full time and thus have less time to volunteer as opposed to the part time worker or stay at home mom.  (Yes moms are busy too, but have more flexibility with schedules than a full time job).

    3.  Men generally would rather donate money to the cause than give up valuable time.

The difference is not so much gender as it is circumstance.  If you polled men and women who had the same job, the same salary, same church, and were the sole income earner for their family, you most likely would have the same volunteer response.   As a male volunteer engaged in community work for over 35 years, I really believe it is the circumstance not the gender that is in play.  It is also the way the individual was raised by their parents, not gender.

  5. Women volunteer more because it is a way of getting experience and getting into the work force/advancement, which is harder for women than men. Men have easier time finding a job, in general, so they are not as likely to volunteer. Plus, men are often into labour jobs, so why would they then volunteer?
