  1. because they get perks from the drug companies.

  2. Doctors prescribe with great care. They also buy malpractice insurance.Non medics think we over prescribe.. It`s not true.

  3. Peroxide won't prevent post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis or rheumatic heart disease.

We don't worry about your sore throat.  We worry about you not having kidneys or a functioning heart.  (My grandfather had rheumatic heart disease, which progressed to mitral valve dysfunction and atrial fibrillation, leading to strokes.)

  4. because they went to medical school for 8 years! and can play GOD!

  5. Because people don't want those other ways.  People want a quick fix that doesn't involve any personal effort.  It is not the doctors cramming pills down people throats, but people want doctors to wave a magic wand over them and have them get better, without the person lifting a finger or cutting something out (smoking or losing weight).

    People just WANT pills.

  6. It's a risk-benefit analysis. Saline (not peroxide) gargles will make a strep throat feel better, and don't risk an allergic reaction, but won't alter the risk of long-term disease. Before penicillin, there were lots of people with post-streptococcal rheumatic heart disease.  So you play the odds. Most often, you win; sometimes, you lose. Since you don't have a "safe" or "don't play" option, you take the best one available.

By the way, I don't get perks from drug companies, and I only look God-like when the observer is ignorant enough to make it so.

  7. Actually, peroxide isn't good for you. Those white bubbles you see when you apply it? Those are actually white blood cells sent to the location of the infection...to fight the infection. It's very damaging.

My doctor only prescribes pills when necessary. Before he gave me pain killers for my back, we tried numerous alternative ways to ease the pain. He has never given my son anti-biotics, but we've never had anything worse than an ear infection, either. Maybe I'm lucky. :)
