Just trying to figure this out. I was born in the Caribbean, Grew up in NY, now living in the South. And it's like anytime you hear about a black school or black neighborhood, you usually hear of violence and burglary. Why is this?

And doesn't this make African Americans ashamed of their people? Just wondering this.

  1. There is still racism against Blacks so in order to make us look bad, they only portray the negatives. But not every Black neighborhood is bad. Ever heard of Saint Albans, New York? Many famous people lived there such as James Brown. I lived there...it's a middle class Black neighborhood. It's like the suburbs with nice houses with land. It's rarely in the news.

Here's a list of famous people who have lived there at some point in their lives:

    Count Basie (1904-1984), jazz pianist.[8]

Bad News Allen, 1976 bronze medalist (Olympic Judo) and pro-wrestler

    Brook Benton

    James Brown (musician)

    Bob Cousy

    W. E. B. DuBois

    Roy Campanella[9]

    John Coltrane

    Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis saxophonist

    Mercer Ellington

Anna Lee Tingle Fisher, M. D. - astronaut

    Ella Fitzgerald

    Milt Hinton

    Lena Horne (1917-), singer.[8]

    LL Cool J

Bill Kenny of the The Ink Spots [10]

    James McBride

    Illinois Jacquet

    Francis Lewis ?

    Joe Louis, boxer

    Will Poole - football player

    Jackie Robinson Major League Baseball

    Al Roker, meteorologist

    Babe Ruth, baseball player

    Eileen Southern, musicologist

    William Grant Still, classical composer

    Fats Waller, jazz pianist

Clarence Williams, jazz pianist and composer

Lester Young, jazz tenor saxophonist and clarinetist
