Why are both candidates for president pandering to LULAC and La Raza?

Well, it seems the obvious answer would be to gain votes.  Obama because he's liberal and likely agrees with the assumptions of those who believe America is badly served by being, in their judgment, insufficiently diverse; McCain because he's also fairly liberal, and comes from a border state with lots and lots and lots and lots of Hispanics, and he is accustomed to trying to please them in order to get elected.
