Why are carbon and oxygen cycling important in ecosystems?

  1. Photosynthesis uses CO2 to bring energy into the ecosystem, releasing O2.  Energy is transferred using cellular respiration, which uses O2 and releases CO2.  If these two cycles stopped, that would mean that energy stopped flowing, and the biosphere would grind to a halt.
