Why are cats so needy? And how do I ween them?

She is...

between the shower curtains when I shower.

between my feet when I go to the bathroom.

beside the sink when I do the dishes.

on the bed when I sleep.

on or beside the car when I clean the car.

by the driveway waiting when I am not home.

Why so needy and the most gentle way to ween her?

Its getting to the point where my girl friend is feeling jealous of her constantly interrupting her cuddling time and her space near me.

Try being in a multi-cat family where BOTH altered male and female cats are equally as needy.  In the bathroom, in the shower, in the living room, while I'm in the kitchen.  I love it.

My husband doesn't mind either of course.  Because there are some that seem more attached to him than me.  But since I'm home most often, and tend to their daily needs they follow me around the most.

Considering the fact that the behavior you've described would probably be far from dangerous to you or your cat, and is as others have suggested only a show of affection toward you why would you want to do anything to break that bond she has with you.  If your GF is jealous then she shouldn't be the girl for you.  Cats and dogs have a way of sensing peoples emotions.  Have you ever had ocasion when someone came into your home and told you that they really disliked cats, and it seemed as if it was that person your cat seemed to want to rub all over, and harrass.  The truth about the persons personality comes out if you'll just give your cat some credit in knowing that their sense about things can be much better than your own.

There is no reason why GF shouldn't be able to "cuddle" and accept you and the cat without being jelous.  If she'd show your cat some added attention instead of jealousy then she might win the cat over.  Best to dump the GF before the cat, and just find a girl that is a cat lover at heart like you seem to be.  The cat will always be there; and is less likely to run out on you when the going gets tough.

It actually sounds like your cat is the jealous one.  My cats are like this as well, and I love it! However, so does my husband.  

A good way to wean her would be to gently pick her up and put her on the ground when you're washing the car, dishes, etc.  It will take her some getting used to, but it will work if you are consistent with it.  

Also, shut the door when you are in the restroom.

And have your girlfriend cuddle with the cat sometimes.

Cats are extremely smart, and will get the hint, however, you may have a kitty who decides this is not the way she wants it.  You know the old saying,  " a cat will come when it wants to, while a dog will come when it's called"

THey are finicky, smart, and stubborn....There's always a squirt bottle method....however this could really hurt her feelings.

lol my bf got a dog once  and i got jealous because the dog stole all of the attention but in fact they both are you babys your gf and your kitten so on leg for ur gf and one for your kitty also why you have 2 hands lol eventually the cat will become more independant but she just loves you.

hey your cat loves you so so much and tell your girlfriend not to get mad..its a kitty that very attached to you and wants to be with you every minute..my cat is the same..they just love you so much..and thats a good thing

Is she an only cat?  Single cats are far needier and it helps to get a second one so that they can keep each other company.  Cats naturally live in colonies despite their reputation as loners.  Even if your cat is an adult, getting a second cat will help and it doesn't really cost anymore to have two instead of one as far less gets destroyed.  If she is an adult, an older kitten (~4+months) would probably be ideal-if she likes to play a younger one would also work.  Make sure to pay more attention to your current cat than to the newcomer so that she doesn't feel like she is being replaced.

I've notice that female cats tend to be far more clingy than males even in multi cat households.

Are you nursing your cat?  If so, that's really weird, and if not, you can't ween her.  Weening is when the mother cat gradually stops nursing the kittens.  

And your girlfriend is jealous of a cat??? Seriously??? Get a new girlfriend.

edit - to train the cat to bother the girlfriend, have the girlfriend feed her meat. beef ,poultry or pork.

cats are predators, they follow the meat.
