Does anyone know why they use cattle grids instead of just using a gate to keep cattle in?I hit one with my jeep and busted the axles and suspension out of it!

  1. people can't forget to shut a cattle grid.

they generally require less upkeep than a gate

the one you went over should have had signs to warn you

go back to the area, with todays newspaper (so you can prove the date) and take photos (including the newspaper) showing the lack of signs.

you might have an insurance claim

  2. I know of one reason is when the pick up truck has feed in it the livestock will rush the truck and the rancher cannot open close the gate while the livestock are all around the truck.

  3. A cattle guard is a series of parallel metal bars which is installed in a roadway over a ditch to prevent ungulates from escaping a fenced area.

The parallel bars are designed to be wide enough so that hooves and legs will fall through, while cars can drive over them safely, although they do need to slow down.

Most hoofed animals are smart enough to recognize the potential hazard of a cattle guard, and they will avoid them: in some cases, animals will even avoid lines painted on a busy road to resemble a cattle guard.

  4. Because it's easier to drive over them slowly than have to keep opening and closing gates every time you drive through. Cattle and horses won't step on the grid because of the open sections
