Question:

Why are cattle moved outside at night?

At the Kentucky State Fair the cattle were taken out of the large viewing building and put into a small field each evening at dusk. There was no grass there for them to feed on so that was not the answer. I don't remember if they were beef or milk cattle. Seems like they would feel safer inside so, keeping them calm doesn't seem to be it.

  1. My guess is that they were removed from the large viewing barn each night to the outside so that could clean the barn each day. The animals probably were brought back into the barn after a few hours. At the Kentucky State Fair you are talking about some very valuable animals.

  2. Not all State fairs do so. But, my guess is that it is usually summer during the fair and its usually much cooler during the night. The last thing they want is the cow going down for heat exhaustion. Also during the time of them being outside they probably clean the stalls out and so.

  3. so the building could be clean the next day, and to get fresh air.

  4. there were probably big fans in the barns and a roof providing shade during the day. so at night they need to clean the barn, also, it's much cooler outside. also, they wait till night because there are fewer people wanting to look at the cattle after dark so this is the logical time to do this. another reason is letting the animals run or even just wander around tends to calm them down so they are a little more temperate when it comes to show time. (they're animals and do feel safer in a group than they do behind walls, to them walls are blind spots not saftey)

  5. two reasons are deduceable

    - perculiar reasons like house keeping and

    - ruminant animals give out some poisonous gasses including methane during their regugitation. they therefore require ventilation and adequate oxygen at night time after they have been fed during the day

  6. It is the same in Arkansas (state fair) It is only the Beef cattle here. We move them out to stretch their legs and too clean the barn. We move them out at 8:00 Pm and have them back in place at 8:00 AM in the barn. If we are NOT with a large group (our chapter usually brings 30 head) and if the animal is a "pricey" one we will leave her in the barn. We do not take out less than 3 head in our group. It is a very long walk, which is great for the animals that are tied up and not able to move too much during the day.

  7. they like to see the stars
