  1. It sounds like people have a couple of definitions of "redshirt," but to the best of my knowledge, redshirt is a person that sits out a year of competition in college.  Like others said this is normally their freshmen year.  This is usually done when a player is not quite ready to compete at the collegent level.  But sometimes kids will play for a year or two and then get injured and use that year for their redshirt year.  Like others have said, it almost ensures (unless they get hurt for more than one year) that an athlete can play their sport for all four years of eligibility.

Oh yeah, the actual term "redshirt player" or "redshirt freshman" or "redshirt senior" just means that the player has already used their redshirt eligibility.

    I hope this helps.

  2. Players at the collegiate level are only allowed 4 years of actual competition, therefore in order to be the best possible player one might need (or be asked) to redshirt for one year. Redshirting does not affect your athletic eligibility thus is not counted against those 4 years. Redshirting is only allowed for one year and if during that one year time a 'redshirted' player plays even one play, then their status is changed from redshirt to active and they are no longer allowed to take off another year.

Players are redshirted for a variety of reasons, such as a players who want to be able to focus on studies and practices for the first year while they are improving, or players who are almost to the level of playing but need to tone more for the sport, such as losing or gaining weight to improve their skills. Or if they are injured and need time to recuperate.

  3. they are the labero they play middle back all the time!

  4. redshirts are persons that the coach or organization expresses interest but the individual needs to prove themselves to be on the squad. i wa a redshirt of mizzou football. takes hard work and dedication to accomplish get out of redshirt status 1st go round

  5. It means that they are the youngest player on the team.  The phrase comes from the early days of basketball when they used to make the youngest player wear a red shirt to designate his status on the team.

  6. When a player is "red-shirted," the staff feels that with proper training, the player will be a much more vital component to the team the following year.  Although this may be their freshman year, the red-shirt allows them to start the next year as a freshman, and allows for four full years of playing time with a higher level of experience.  If the player's red-shirt is removed, the terms are lost, and the player is no longer eligible for another four years.

  7. It means they sit out a year in sports, but don't lose a year in eligibility. You can only redshirt one year in college. Usually people do it as a freshman.

  8. Players who are "red-shirted" are still members of the team and are involved in practice but do not play in games, and therefore do not lose a year of eligibility.  Usually it applies to freshman but can be any year.

Redshirted players can be used in a game in the season that they are redshirted, but automatically lose their redshirt status (meaning that they lose that year of eligibility).

So a player could be on a college team for 5 years and only play 4 if one year they were redshirted.
