Question:

Why are certain players on Chessmaster Challenge deliberately slow?

Hi, I love the training program on the Chessmaster Challenge program. I've finally beaten Jonesie on a regular basis and now have beaten Berry. Now, I know, they slow down the play of the very good players so that you don't play them - but I'm playing Miranda and she's taking several minutes per move. Is this deliberate on the program's part? I always set my time to 30 minutes so I have extra time to view the board. Any one have experience with this? Your thoughts would be appreciated.

  1. I think it is a deliberate strategy to annoy players and cause them to possibly lose concentration.

  2. They play slow to annoy their opponets hopeing they'll quit the game.

  3. I believe the issue comes in when approximating a lower rating.  You see, these great chess programs are awesome at the high rating, when they are performing at peak.  This problems start when they try to "approximate" what a 1200 would play like.

The program can't understand what a lower rated player would look for in a move, so it makes silly mistakes and moves unrealistically slow so that it in some way approximates what a player of that lvl moves likes.

All in all, the ratings are horribly off. When I was in tournament play, I was a 1200, now that I am getting back in to it, I had to go to the Chess master 1800-1900 rated players to get a real game.

After a lot of rambling, it is method to approximate rating.
