  1. At pre-school age it's the primary sense.

    Sight - sound - touch / taste / smell.

  2. Uh... Because they cannot read?

Using visual stimulation works because the images are more easily recognized than a bunch of meaningless symbols that they will learn the meaning of in a couple of years.

Up to that point in their life, they have dealt with visual images, such as the fruit example you cited.

  3. Its all a part of NLP, neuro linguistic programming, different peoples brains are stimulated in different ways, that is why there is usually writing pictures and oral stimulation in the classroom.

  4. Charts, pictures, graphs and symbols are EXTREMELY important for children, especially at younger ages. Pictures help them make a mental connection with objects and words, and give them a better understanding of things. It has been proven that if pictures are on the wall of a small child's room, and the majority of his/her toys have to do with learning(i.e-flash cards, coloring books that have to do with numbers, and some sort of alphabet game) their speech will be much better.

  5. Because they can't read yet, so images help them to learn about the world around them.

  6. Learnering styles vary from individual to individual.  Some people like to listen, read or observe.  Pictures are a very good way of getting a message accross, especially when there is a lot happening in class.

Pictures are a simple way of re-enforcing a message.  Even though your learners can not read and may not actually be listening to you, especially if part of a group, they will pick up and remember visual clues.
