  1. I think the first person was right

They are just coming out of that age where they are praised for every little thing. As they grow up, it will go awaybecause they aren't going to be praised as much.

  2. Because they're spoiled?

They might not understand how everything in the real world is - it it looks easy then it probably is - could be the way they think. When you are young the world is sort of carefree and easy - you don't have to think about what you wear and how you actually look like - when you get older you become more conscious of what you're capable of.

  3. It might have something to do with the nurturing that's going on. Many children are encouraged and praised for small milestones during these formative years, and it really affects the self-esteem. That's my take on it, anyway.

  4. It could be the way they are socialized: how their parents treat them, what kind of values and norms they are subjected to.

Even more, it is the "Me-Generation" syndrome that is so characteristic of many societies today. Instant self gratification is what rocks. In every activity that we go through within a particular day, every effort is enlisted towards making that process easier, convenient and efficient for me, me, me. This becomes the very ethos in which children are growing up. Thus it becomes natural for them to constantly think of themselves, first.
