  1. yes

  2. The modern city structure was created by the Romans, over 2k years ago. A city structure allows for people to receive goods and services locally, instead of having to travel. Some things we take for granted would not be possible without a city structure, or the Romans in general. Examples: running water, fair market (shopping), waste (toilets, drains, garbage, etc). In the late 1800's/early 1900's this was expanded to include; telegraph/phones, electricity, gas (natural) and in the late 1900's; Internet, cellular communications, etc. All these things started in cities or towns and linked them together. Imagine trying the Pony Express for getting an answer to your question? It would take months.

Other benefits of cities. Police, fire, and medical. Mass-transit (subways, buses, trolley). Centralized educational locations (vs home-schooling). Libraries.

Downfalls of cities? Increased criminal activities (larger selection for criminals to prey upon). Government indecision (failure to agree upon common goals/interests). In reference to other countries; extradition problems, different monies, language issues.

For a better understanding of cities, start with the ancient Romans, the founders of today's modern city structure.

  3. srry, cant help! ... IT's HOMEWORK!!! YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO DO IT!!!

  4. Human civilisation shifted from Hunter-Gatherer system to Agricultural one roughly about 10,000 years ago. HG's were nomads killing animals to survive. Agriculturals had to settle down to grow crops and tend cattle etc.

To protect stored grains for future reserves the Agriculturals needed to cluster together in larger numbers to defend their way of life from enemy attacking villages. Eventually, enough people could survive in one location to develop into the size of ancient cities.

  5. Assuming the premise is true--that cities are, in fact, the most "spectacular" achievements of human civilization, I'm wondering what you mean, exactly, by "spectacular?" Spectacular just means having the quality or condition of a spectacle.

Cities are intricate systems as others have said. In that regard they are amazing. Cities are fundamentally an externalization of the human rational mind; they reflect ingenuity, but they also reflect humanity's darker side as they are dangerous, polluted, crime-filled concentrations of largely stressed-out people.

  6. No! I don't think Cities are the most spectacular achievevement of humans. Maybe in the past when the cities of today were small towns or villages they were the greatest achievement. There people could live in harmony with one another. Today that village charm is lost and we are left with is the self-centered city life.

So I don't think Cities are the greatest achievement of humans. Now we should hope to presereve whats left of the small town charm. That would be an achievement.

  7. They definitely are!! Where else can you Shop in Malls, eat in Style, and enjoy in night clubs?

Also they are the places where all kinds of facilities are readily available. Like hospitals, drug stores, huge libraries, Reputed Educational Institutes, etc.

Only drawback is that people are forgetting to be friendly and helpful. Society is getting meaner and cruel everyday.

    Apart from this Cities ROCK!

  8. Because until the advent of farming, the concept of a "city" was never envisioned by nomadic Hunter/Gatherers...

Farming provided a storable food source, which allowed many people to live in a small space, and not have to keep moving, in search of fresh resources...

Cities ten thousand years ago, led to the birth of architecture, engineering, sanitation and complex irrigation practices...

In latin "city" is the root word for "civilization"...

  9. Well, yes and no.

Yes, in that you have the potential of many great minds coming together and making inventions for the common good. Smooth roads, efficient plumbing, etc. etc.

No, in that if there weren't cities, you probably wouldn't have big enough conglomerations of people to have such highly measurable impacts on the environment. We'd probably be a smaller race, and would probably be stronger individually, as far as fending for ourselves and such...I think.

  10. idk i am only in 7th grade!!!! but i would say yes thats what my mommy said and she is a history teacher

  11. People could work together, they could make shops, farms and palaces. the people didn't have to travel, they could stay in one place. They could make food not gather it. In cities they worshipped...idk. cities they had festivals and markets.

  12. Cities are a pretty spectacular achievement.

Cities are organized almost like a living organism. They have specific lines of waste removal, orderly and efficient mechanisms to bring in new products (food, consumer goods, treated water), and have amazing internal organization--think about how you can locate a single apartment in New York City, just with an address. A few numbers and street names can locate any place in a city of millions of rooms!

On top of that, there is a hierarchy of organization among the humans themselves, with each segment of the population in clearly demarcated areas. Everyone knows where the "poor" areas are, and where the "rich" areas are, and where the "business" and "shopping" areas are.

Just think. In centuries past, a family needed a huge plot of land for a farm to keep a small community afloat. With modern technology and human organization, a plot as small as manhattan island can feasibly house and support millions upon millions of people!

  13. I'll give you some points. You can expand them on your own:

    Easy living

    Better job opportunities

    Better Medical and Educational institutes

Easier to keep up with the latest technologies

Visually spectacular with their impressive sky scrappers

Great places like the Malls and Movies for friends to hang out.

    Modern Lifestyle

Broad minded society with modern thoughts and easier acceptance of the changing city culture.

    Hope its enough!
