Why are college frats and sororities based on greek myth?

  1. They are based on anchient Greek fraternal - as in brotherly - clubs.

    Ya know, male bonding, g*y s*x, and all that.


  2. No - not on myths.  They are based on the Greek concept of "Philios" which means fraternal or brotherly love. Not g*y love -- the love you have for a brother or sister. Frats & sororities are supposed to be  groups of like-minded people who get togeher as a social organization which also does philolanthropy work.  Greeks have "secret ceremonies" -- more based on biblical or Masonic symbols than anything Greek.  Only their name and/or secret mottos are usually in Greek.  Everything else is as American as apple pie.

  3. They are not based on Greek myth, they just happen to use Greek letters as their symbols.  It started with Phi Beta Kappa. The letters they chose were the initials of a Greek motto meaning "philosophy is the guide of life."
