Why are companies biased against homeless persons?

I have a family member living in a rescue mission and no companies will consider them for a position even though they are qualified and in some instances "over-qualified" for their advertised positions.

  1. It seems obvious that most who are homeless lack the skills to exist normally in society.

There are justifiable fears of lack of hygiene and reliability!

It seems that from your post they are correct that not even the families of homeless people will help with accommodation and welfare so why are you so surprised about employers?!!

Companies have an obligation to the owners, shareholders and other workers to employ the best applicant they can!!

  2. It's because morons think that all homeless people are either drunks, or druggies, or criminals.  Some are, it's true; but most aren't.  It's going to be very interesting when all those military troops return home and some of them wind up homeless.  Then we'll see how we support our troops.

  3. How does the company know they are living in a rescue mission?  Can you let your family member use your mailing address and phone number so that the company doesn't know they are living there?

Does the family member have something in their background that might be preventing companies from considering them?

How does the family member dress when they go to an interview?  Maybe they need help with getting "interview" clothes.

If you can truly prove that they aren't getting hired because they live in a rescue mission, then there might be some recourse for discrimination, so the family member might want to talk to someone about that.
