Why are creepy stories commonly revolved around mirrors?

I've been reading some scary stories on creepypasta, and in quite a lot of them it says 'if you do this in front of a mirror at night' or 'something will be staring at you in your mirror at night'. Why do you think that people revolve creepy stories around mirrors? Surely they're perfectly fine to use at night...

good question. Some cultures considered the mirror was a manifestation of the soul. mirrors and glass have also unwittingly caused natural holograms which freaked out the less informed. flaws in ancient mirrors cause `images` to be seen in them. I look forward to what others say on the subject.

because when i was 10 , i saw this ghost spirit coming out my wall clock !!!!!!!! as it ticked , he looked at me and as he was coming near me. my grandfather sudden came into my room to ask something and boom the ghost spirit was gone!!!

i used to believe that if you stared into a mirror for too long, the devil would start staring back at you! My mom told me this as I was quite a vain child and spent hours gazing into the mirror! Now, I still don't pause too long, you can never be too careful!

Seriously though...

I dont have a clue. I did hear once that it was because mirrors were believed to be a portal to the supernatural side... but im not to sure... Google it.... ??

It has been said that mirrors are a gateway for the dead .

I have no proof of this but I have been told this more than once by several different people .

here’s an experiment, using a small candle in a darkened room to illuminate a mirror, gaze at your reflection and let your eyes relax, do not try to bring them back into focus but gaze intently at your reflection, if done correctly you will see your reflection change shape, mine appears almost demonic. I believe this is just your brain re-interpreting what it sees within the shadows of the reflection, by not re-focusing when your brain tells you to it works with what it has in front of it. this may be why so many mirror stories are based on the devil demons etc. in ancient law mirrors were used as gateways to the other side, i believe this was mis-interpreted; if you gaze into a mirror with the correct method you can transfer your conscious to the reflection which is your etheric double, thus rendering yourself out of body or OBE as it is sometimes referred.

I believe your wiser older folks invented these stories so that you wouldnt spend hours gazing at yourself in the mirror and loving yourself.  They were helping you in understanding that the mirror is to be used as a tool.

I also believe the reason why the mirror is related to a lot of esoterical stuff is that is helps detach the spirit from the body, who you are looking at in the mirror is not your true self, and in a way it can open a portal.

People use mirrors in scary stories because mirrors are known to have another world in them a world that's completely opposite to ours so ghosts and all other supernatural life exists inside mirrors

if you ever write a scary story putting a mirror in it will really scare the readers, they will never look at them selves the same way again Lol

Well I've watched alot of horror films such as : Candyman & Urban Legend - Bloody Mary.. show that if you say ''Candyman'' or ''Bloody Mary'' into the mirror at midnight, a certain amount of times, something will happen to you such as: being cut, see a dead corpse of yourself, die instantly or just be left traumatised...

You can only do this on your own in the dark, but I don't know anyone that has the guts to do that.

But to be perfectly honest, I don't tend to use mirrors at night, because I tend to be asleep lol.

Because when you look in the mirror, are you absolutely sure that is only a reflection of you or is it really the alternate you in another dimension?
