They aren't mean...they just enjoy teasing and playing with the living....They feed off fear - our fear - the more you fear them, the more 'mean and nasty' they will be....But if you treat them with love and respect (something which they haven't ever experienced) they will leave you alone....

If we believe the Biblically based theory that demons are fallen angels led by the fallen angel Lucifer aka Satan whom God demoted from his lofty position along with other angels who sinned then we have reason to believe that these demoted heavenly beings might have a grudge against God. And if we believe what the Bible has to say about God acquiring new members for his kingdom through the ever increasing human population, Satan and the demons can try to thwart the growth of God's kingdom by ruining people. So, by ruining people, demons wage war against God.

Ok, this is more of a religious question, and so I will turn on my religious mode. What follows is in no way to be confused with science and math, even though it is in the science and math section.

God created angels as a servitute race, and humans were the loved race with the free will to reciprocate that love with servitute or not if they chose to.

Some of the angels were jealous of mankind and rebelled against God led by the most powerful of angels, Lucifer. Lucifer is a cherub (which by the way, arent really cute baby angels, cherubs are butt kicking warlord angels.) and is very very powerful. These angels were cast out of heaven and sent to live on earth amounst the creatures that they hate so much.

Motivated by revenge and hatred, thier goal is to prevent people from loving God, as this is what God desires and to make our lives as miserable as they possibly can.

They are much smarter and stronger then any humans, and our only defense against them would be the protection of Jesus Christ himself.
