Why are dice needed for the Pokemon TCG?

Dice aren't technically needed for the Pokémon TCG.  According to the rules, all you need is a coin and some method of recording damage to your Pokémon.  At most events I've been to, people use dice in place of the coin tosses (Odds=Tails, Evens=Heads), and the dice also serve as damage counters (I use 12-sided, with each number representing 10 damage, e.g., 6=60 damage, etc.).
