Why are different states different colors on maps?

For example, Idaho might be red, but Kansas is yellow.

  1. because it would be harder to see the different states because of all the rivers and possibly county's

  3. to tell the boundrays apart, and to give our nation more flare!

  7. It is just so you can distinguish them from neighboring states.  I don't believe there is any other significance.

  8. Honestly they are different colors, not to represent or symbolize, but to make the map more legible so you can distinguish one state from another.
