Why are dogs put down and not...?

Why are dogs put down and not humans? People kill stray dogs, what about homeless people? We have more than enough homeless people. Dogs that no one wants are put down. Why arent orphans put down? We have more than enough orphans. Is it because dogs are mass bred? What about people who practice unprotected s*x and get pregnent and just throw their babies at the firedepartment. When dogs are bad they get put down. Why arent kids at juvenile hall put down? They do worse than savage animals do to one another.

Think about that but my question is:

What could be a series of laws ( or any movements or acts ) that could put a stop to dogs being put down ( mass breeding, strays, bad behavior are all reasons why dogs are put down ).

I think my solution would be, the US could close down any and every store that force breeds dogs and sells them ( aside from animal shelters and rescue facilities ), Dogs get about 2 months to live ( its usually around 2-4 weeks ), during a dogs final 2 weeks of a chance at adoption their picture goes on a flier on a wall outside of an adoption agency as well as supporting companies. As for dogs who have bad behavior, instead of being put down right away, they could get some training to behave better around humans, and if that fails they could be put down. I know my solution has a few flaws but try and come up with something that addresses as many flaws as possible. Even hearing about dogs being put down makes me feel awful cause i have dogs of my own and just thinking of other dogs not having a second chance at life makes me feel terrible.

And also, Can you donate dog treats ( or food, toys, ect ) to dog shelters?

  1. That sounds perfect. But sadly, we don't live in a perfect world.

I agree with you completely. Dogs, cats, all animals really, are treated unfairly nowadays. People are much more malicious than dogs and get away with so much more. Maybe if we keep hoping......

And yes, you can donate treats, food, and toys to animal shelters. I've done it many times before.

    =)

  2. In a perfect world! you have high hopes for what I think may be a Hopeless situation, in that there is so much wrong in the world, where to start? Start with God, cause only he can fix what's wrong and we only have to ask!!!!!

  3. Start by considering the cold hard facts.

It is the BUYER of the pups purchased from breeders that dump their dogs at the shelters.

As a BUYER, you have a responsibility to the pup as it grows up.  Train it properly, socialize it properly, feed and care for it properly.  Don't dump it when you decide that you can't handle it anymore.  Or you have to move and "can't" take it with you.

As a BUYER, why don't you have the breeder's name and phone number handy to see if they will take the dog back before dumping it in a shelter.  Did you even bother to keep this important information?

As a BUYER and a RESPONSIBLE dog owner, did you exhaust every possible resource to resolve your dog's issues and spend the money to do so, before dumping it at the shelter?

As a BUYER, did you take your dog to the vet whenever necessary regardless of the cost to make sure that the problem you are having is not a health issue before dumping it at the shelter?

So, my solution to the problem is to require all potential pet owner's to be licensed and inspected prior to being allowed to purchase a dog.  And to have to renew their license annually and be subject to annual inspections at their home.   After all, that is what many state's are lobbying for right now in regards to dog breeders.  I say what is fair for one is fair for all.

  4. First I want to say " You sound very intelligent and mature for your age .They actually do have many rehabilitation centers across the US.... but I feel the same .. it's so inhumane to do it to a HUMAN .. but it's ok for a PET... when to many of us .. they are our family. To answer your other question ... Y-E-S .. yes you can donate dog treats to a shelter .. and yes you can be a volunteer ... just have to talk to your parents and have them bring you ... they will be very proud .... HEY KEEPS THIS UP .... YOU COULD BE THE ONE WHO CAN CHANGE THINGS FOR THESE ANIMALS ... God Bless !!!!!

  5. Call your shelter and see what they accept as donations. I've taken in stacks of 3-ring binders that were being discarded at work and they wanted them all.  If the shelter has a website, they often have a 'want' list posted on it.

  6. As far as laws to prevent animals being euthanized, the government can legislate all they want, but the irresponsible people who have 'oops' pregnancies, breed their 'pet' dogs, and don't properly care for their dogs that are the cause of the overpopulation issue and shelter animals, and no laws will stop that, people will continue to behave irresponsibly in regards to their pets because they just don't care.  Many shelters now are going 'no kill' (which is a misleading term because they aren't), which means basically that no adoptable dog is euthanized for lack of space.  They still put down dogs with medical conditions or behavioral issues that make them unadoptable to the general public.

Yes, you can donate dog treats, toys, food, and other supplies to shelters.  They really appreciate it.  Some will have rules about what they will or will not accept, so call first and ask what items they need and will accept.  For example, many shelters won't take open bags of dog food, only sealed ones, which really bites, because I happen to have tons of open bags at the moment with only a small amount gone from each, acquired while working through a food allergy issue with one of my dogs.  Wish the shelter would take them so they don't go to waste, but sadly they won't.  Also some shelters have agreements with dog food companies to be supplied with food free-of-charge, so they may not need food, but would certainly appreciate other items.

Add: Some shelters will allow a 16 year old to volunteer, some will not.  It will depend on how young their insurance carrier will cover a volunteer worker.  Call your local shelter(s) and ask what their policies are.  It's also possible that if their minimum age is higher than 16 they would still allow you to volunteer if one of your parents would accompany you and volunteer as well.

  7. The first part of your question is morally reprehensible. Hitler would have appreciated your ideas.

Dogs are put down because people don't spay & neuter their pets and they breed irresponsibly, and puppy mill breeders produce more than there are people willing to buy or adopt a pet.

You might want to get involved with the Humane Society or related groups. But don't let them know about your contempt for other people.

  8. I'm from the Uk where we their has been an increased number of stabbings over the last year, these are kids in gangs killing people who either defend there own property from being damaged by thugs, or who could just be innocently walking down the street and they get no more than a slap on the wrist or the most minimal of jail terms for snuffing out the life of an innocent human being, and yet dogs get put down for biting someone because their owners have no idea how to raise them thus turning them into dangerous dogs, so i agree that dogs should be given a second chance but unfortunately it seems that there is not enough funding to do this, we have rescue centres in the uk which are only just about surviving on donations but rescue centres would not take dangerous dogs because of the risk to their staff. Unfortunatly we see gangs and even adults who keep dogs such as staffs and pitbulls(pitbulls which are illegal to own i the uk anyway)as fashion accessories to try and scare people and make them look tough, so of course they end up without proper training which eventually leads them to attack someone, with the right training they could actually be nice dogs.  I own a bulldog and it makes me sad when i hear about dogs being out down because or careless owners.

One thing that really hits a nerve for me though is dog fighting, its the most sickening thing i have ever come to hear about, i cant believe people would deliberatly beef their dogs up so that they could fight and kill another dog, all for few quid, these so-called humans are the ones that need putting down.

  9. I agree a lot with what you said, although it sounds harsh. Most of the time you can donate to the shelter but they have suppliers that they purchase from so it is best to donate money. They can get the same stuff you can get for a lot cheaper. You can also donate your time and even foster dogs that need rehabilitation.

I think that there are far too many inmates in prison that need to be executed. I think if you kill anyone you should die and if you harm a child you should die. No questions asked about those two. I think most rapist should die. If these prisoners do not want to die, I think they should drop them off on a island but they will not be allowed to leave and the island should not be nice.

I think minors in trouble should be punished and so should the parents. However, after 18 the gentle treatement should stop.

I think anyone who abandons a dog should have to do 6 months community service. It really makes me mad when people get a pet and then just throw it away.

Now about dogs: I think all dogs should be fixed unless the owner pays a great deal of money to take a course, get papers for the dog and so on. You shouldn't be able to say, no your dog can't breed, but make the owners work for it to prove they are responsible. There are enough homeless animals so I think all cats or dogs should be fixed unless the person pays a lot of money and takes some classes.

The law of being fixed could be inforced by making Vets keep records and also animals shelters. I think anyone who wants a pure breed should get it from a rescue society.

    That's my idea.

  10. they are put down because society and the government believes that there lives are not as valuable as humans. which i think is not true. i am a big animal lover and believe they should have rights just like the rest of us.because shelters belive it is cheaper in the long run to put animals down then pay for care and food.there are some no kill shelters out there.there are so many puppy mills out there that are just in in to make a quick buck. they do not care about there animals at all, only the money. as long as there  are puppy mills, there are always gonna be thousands of dogs that can not be adopted out.maybe it is better for an animal to  be put down then stay with a home who does not love them or  care about what happens to them? i love animals and would never intentionally hurt one. my dog is my best friend 9 year old black lab. she is bad sometimes but i love her  to death.
