  1. Well, why not?  On average, a rodent doesn't need quite the same space as cats/dogs.  They're loving, and you can interact with most of them quite easily.  Feeding/bedding/toys aren't that expensive (Though, vet care can end up being pricier then with non-exotics.)

  2. I believe rodents are popular because they are someone easier to maintain than say a dog or a cat.  They are relatively simple to care for compared to other small animals like snakes, lizards, frogs, etc.  They are more interactive than a fish, they are something that little kids can pet and hold.

Rodents have relatively short lifespans which is desirable for parents looking to pick a small pet for a kid.  Adults like them because they aren't as demanding as a dog, and most apartments/rentals allow animals in cages but not dogs or cats (or you have to pay a fee for them).

The costs are low for a rodent, usually only needing to buy block/seed mix, bedding/litter, cage, and toys.  Vet care is somewhat minimalistic though can be expensive in comparison to the cost of the rodent (still far less than a dog though).

    Lastly, they're just so cute!

    Hope that helps!

  3. Often because parents don't feel their kids are ready for a dog or cat, and the smaller rodents seem more manageable. They take up very little space, and can get by with just a clean cage, some food and plenty of water. You never have to take them for a walk, unless you really want to. Fish are easy pets too, but they don't always live very long.

  4. They are cheap, less maintenance and in couple of years they will be dead.

  5. Rodents are popular pets because most don't need a huge cage. They are small and easy to care for, making good pets for kids, especially when the parents can see themselves caring for their child's pet in the near future.

  6. They are popular because they are easier to take care of, but still have a visible personality unlike a fish.

Some of them are cuddly and can be taught tricks.

Some of them, like rats, are also "pocket pets" so it's easier to take them outside. Just stick them on your shoulder and your good to go!
