Why are electricity cables along roadsides in Australia supported by wooden poles ?

I am on a visit to Sydney, Australia and noticed that wooden poles are used to support electric cables by the roadsides. Why wood and not other materials ?

  1. Probably these creosoted or tanalized poles were erected decades ago when there was no log ban and wooden poles where cheaper than concrete and steel poles.

    Nowadays, few countries use wooden pole for cost consideration and aesthetics reasons.


  2. I agree with Thomas.  Also, and this may be another benefit, wood doesn't conduct electricity.

  3. Wood poles are inexpensive, strong, easy for workers to climb, relatively easy to install, and last a long time.
