  1. It is very simple, it would not be part of Bush's plan if the environmentalists had not spread  false information and had PR campaigns tauting the subject.  If the push had not come from them, Bush would never have considered ethanol.  He was being branded a "big oil guy" for not supporting it.  And remember, much of the push came from the Al Gore bunch.    Remember the days when environmentalists said ethanol would be cheaper than gas and was free as a feedstock because we had all this excess corn.  Anyone thinking about it would have known it wasn't going to be true and that much of the potential impact was ignored.  Only the big corn companies made money.

Well, ethanol is more than gas still, it has impacted food prices, and it is probably at least as polluting as gas.  And in countries like Brazil where it does work, they are cutting down rain forest to plant sugar beets.  In NC, all the ethanol plants on the drawing board have gone / are going away because they are not economically viable.

  2. Because conservatives and their mouth pieces, i.e., Limbaugh, Hannity, Savage, like to blame environmentalists for the moronic policies of conservatives.

Republicans use to be about personal responsibility but no more. It has been a Republican congress the last 12 of 14 years. Why did Republicans block and increases to the CAFE standards? Why did Republicans block oil drilling in FLA?

Look what Bush and Cheney did about the energy solution with Enron. Yes the ethanol issue is a Republican issue but they sure like to shift blame.
