Question:

Why are family values important?

Aren't they just another religious construct?

This is an honest question - not a satirical one...

Its just that it seems that over time, society is evolving - we are now focused on a larger common goal of profit making and the running of a capitalist society - so, you don't really need family - your relationships are mainly work based...

Strong families are designed for roaming tribes and farmers - but in a post-industrial society - family is simply not that important...

They have grown into a novelty rather than a necessity - like keeping dogs - they used to be for a practical reason like hunting, tracking, guarding - now they are just little toys, "companions" or conversation starters...

  1. Family values and your family are needed. I'm sure you are well aware that families are the building block to how a person will develop in life. Being in a family gives you character, it builds you to become a better person and to learn from mistakes. You also, learn from their mistakes. If you didn't have a family, and lived alone, you wouldn't be very sociable. Maybe you wouldn't even have some knowledge of how things are run. Your family not only instills values, but also provides very important and much needed tools for your success in life. If you were to completely cut off your family, wouldn't you feel alone? After all, we are human.

If relationships were mainly work based, as you say, we wouldn't function as a society. We'd become loners. And, values and skills that were learned from past generations would diminish. And, the structure of society would crumble.

I think you must have some problem with your family personally, to think or even write that famlies are like keeping dogs...

  2. Families are VERY important- no matter what your religious or political views.  Even in a situation where a single mother is raising her kids, having parental guidance can guide a child through life in a loving way that no school or government entity could even come close to duplicating.  Please do not discount the importance of parental influences in the life of a child.

  3. family values are important because that would help you make important decisions in life. if your values are good and intact then you would not make things that would hurt yourself or other people. you also become a better citizen of a society if your family values are well developed :)

  4. When I was until 26 years of age, I thought the same way.

    Now i am 31.

Now I am thinking of getting married to a nice girl, having 4 children. Having good friends, relatives.

Its sooo funny, but its human behavior.

  5. Do you see how much America has gone down hill since family values started going by the wayside?

There is no such thing anymore as personal accountability.  People used to think before they made choices.  But now with out having been reared in a way that teaches you to be responsible and to think, people are doing whatever they want and then crying for someone else to bail them out when they get over their heads.

Same goes for businesses and corporate america.  It is hard to find businesses that will "do the right thing" when it comes to possibly losing profit.

I think if we can possibly rekindle some kind of family values, americans may actually stand a chance

  6. family values = no b*tch@ssness!

  7.            The family will always be important for basic instruction for life.  The importance is not only for the children, but also for the young adults building security and structure in caring for others.  Families don't always have to be related to have strong values.  Adopted children are the most obvious, but churches form extended families as do gangs, civic groups, and work partners.  Shared values and common goals can be passed from old to young.  Stability and progress can be had.

Profit making is not a new thing to history, but there are changes.  With a more diverse economy in the history of the world comes with it changes on all social levels.  Some changes will help support traditional families while others will tear it apart.  But the idea of family will never collapse.

People are social.  They will band together to fight a common enemy, and they will come together to mourn a passing friend.  No amount of evolved thought could change the fact that people need others.  And with that need they will form their own families; of loved ones, and the young left to teach.
