Why are female pedophiles less common than male pedophiles?

I don't have any statistics but we all know it's true, and that's not to say that there aren't a lot of female pedophiles out there, it just means that there are a freakish amount of male pedophiles... Regardless, what do you think accounts for this? Could it be linked to genes that also involve a sense of humor? Because if you'll notice too there are far more male comedians than female, and that's not because women aren't allowed to be funny, its just because compared to men they arent't as good, you'll never see a female Jim Carrey for instance, it just doesn't work... So that brings me to another issue, is it societal instead of genetic?

Ever heard of Lisa Lampanelli?  She rocks almost every roast that she does.  And Cloris Leachman was one of the most hilarious people at Bob Saget's roast.  Give me a break.  The reason you see more male comedians (and not all or even most of them are funny) is that comedy (just like acting) was male-dominated and every time female wanted to be a part of it, she was quickly shut down.

As for your original question: I'm genuinely unsure.  One theory is this: A lot of pedophiles have been victims of sexual abuse themselves, but, because women seem to be more likely than men to come forward and talk about their abuse, they're more likely to A: Get sympathy for it and B: Get help for it.  There is a stigma attached to men that complain about sexual abuse.  People see them as weak and they also see it as, "Your teacher was hot; you should be happy that she cupped your balls" or whatever the case may be.  They assume that boys (no matter how young) should be exposed to s*x, and therefore should not complain when they are abused.  Again, this is just my theory.

As a psych nurse, I assumed that the reason for pedophilia to be more common among males than females probably was due to sexual abuse of the pedophile when he was a child, ESPECIALLY  abuses, physical and sexual, committed by the mother. But, I've kept up with the research and there truly is no correlation between early sexual abuse and becoming a pedophile.  What is emerging, though, in just the last five years or so, thanks especially to MRI-based research, is numerous neurological difference among pedophiles including less white matter and lower activation rates of the hypothalamus.  Apparently, pedophilia is a gross neurological disorder.  Why it effects males more than females is unknown and although there isn't any genetic correlation yet made, it is probably a genetic disorder that harms males more than females, which is a clue as to where genetically to look for where the problem is.

Males don't generally get an erection until adolesence, and perhaps this leaves female paedophiles a bit limited in what they can do. From age 12 to 17 the rates of non-forcible sexual abuse of males is 11 times higher from women than men (stats from US crime database in 2000).

Pedophilia is considered to be a "paraphilia" and all of the paraphilias are more common in men than in women.  I think there is a strong genetic component to most paraphilias.  The genetic push for male is to have multiple sexual partners.  As such, men have become more varied in their sexual appetites.  You don't have to look much further than the average teenage male to see this.  A result of this heterogeneity of sexual interest is that there is room for some unusual or, if you like, perverse preferences.  The cultural / societal push for men has been to control sexual appetite.  The genetic push for women seems to be to limit sexual contact.  There is no reason for a woman to have multiple s*x partners, at least from a biological point of view.  It is in the woman's interest to be more selective.  And hence, you get a narrower range of sexual appetite.  Culturally, woman have been "liberated" to seek out their sexual interests, but this doesn't seem to have a lot to do with biology.

The proneness to pedophilia is higher in men than women. There are biological factors at play.

But I agree with you, a lot of other men I know notice that women aren't generally funny. I believe this is societal and not biological. Having a sense of humor is what every woman/girl has said they want in a man/boy. Females do not have to worry about humor when it comes to attracting a mate. It is not one the core qualities the average man looks for, generally speaking. Just to put it plainly, men have to work on their humor whereas women...not so much.

pedophilia is about control and fantasy. I think some men have trouble in our sometimes macho society. They also have fantasies, they may have trouble sharing these with people their own age, so they prey on children.  Women are bearers of children so they I think generally are more protective of those children, again generally speaking. Women, more so than men, are also allowed in our society to express their desires and fantasies.

On a personal note: I don't think pedophilia is genetic at all. I think its sick, and if anyone ever, preyed on my children, please pray for their lives.
