Why do we define women by their marital staus (Miss, Ms, MRS), but not men?

Wouldn't Ms for all females and Mr for all men be more appropriate?

  1. It has just always been that way. Usually if you do not know if a woman is married you would use the Ms.  title.

  2. It has not "always been that way".

It is cultural and the honorifics differ in societies.

Women historically have been considered as chattel, thus owned by their husbands.

The status of any woman over the age of marriage is considered important to denote their status to wondering males.

As most societies are patriarchal it is men who say what is which.

  3. Uh, that's exactly why 'Ms.' was proposed.

When I was a child, it was Mrs. for married females, and Miss for unmarried.

Then feminists proposed Ms. for all females.

I don't know why more people don't use it. The grocery clerks habitually mis-address me as Mrs. Drives me nuts.

  4. Men are allowed to have up to four wives, but women are allowed only once, that's it.
