Why are females most often portrayed as the lonely character?

Maybe it's just me, but i always notice how the role of the lonely person is usually a woman or girl. I may be wrong. If you have any clue i would love to know.

i think because it is easier for an audience to empathize with a female character. but i don't think it's the only role positioned for women. the real question should be, why are the disposable/whores only women?
